White sands national park is like standing in the middle of a 360° beach! It’s such an incredible and unexpected sight. And it is so beautiful! Just pristine sand as far as you can see in every direction.

As we were driving in, following the road from the entrance, I started to see big white sand piles to the left with grass or plants growing all over. It was very cool though. Seeing extremely white little hills was certainly different than the red or natural colored terrain that we had been driving through.

That was just a taste. I had no idea White Sands NP was gonna be so amazing!!

We continued our drive and pure sand began building up along both sides of the road, and then the road became covered in sand too.  By this time, the pure sand was not just close to the road. The sand had stretched out as far as you could see and there were pure sand dunes on both sides of the road. It was striking to take in. Almost like waking up and everything you see is covered in a solid coat of untouched snow. But it was white sand!!

There were people playing in the sand and sliding down the dunes. You can purchase a sled at the White Sands Visitor Center Gift Shop. Check hours though. They were not open at the time we were visiting the park. You can also bring your own sled. If you are staying in the area, inquire about sleds where you are staying. They may even provide sleds at your campsite, hotel, etc.

The cherry on top, was that the sun was starting to set while we were there. Such a majestic sight with the glow of the sun meeting the white sand out on the horizon.

Going in the evening in September was ideal. The sand was not too hot to enjoy. I can see that there would be times that the sand would be so hot, during the day in summertime, that you couldn’t enjoy it. Also, wearing sunglasses would be a must when sun is out and reflecting off the sand like it does off of snow.

This is another national park that we are so glad we decided to visit! Have you been to White Sands National Park in New Mexico? If not, we highly recommend you checking out this NP and playing in the sand!
