Looking for a fun weekend getaway, especially during rodeo season?! Head to Fort Worth, Texas! We recently spent a weekend here with three other couples, who have become our most frequent travel friends!
Fort Worth Stockyards
We started the morning at Fort Worth Stockyards just in time for the cattle drive. OK it’s more like a cattle walk and be ready because the 15 minute ‘drive’ only last about two minutes in front of you as you line up street side. But, you do get to see some impressive, cattle and cowboy “herders/drovers“.
Next, we had just enough time to catch the Gun Fight Reenactment before lunch. This performance is more like 20 minutes and the Cowboys are funny and entertaining.
Provender Hall at Fort Worth Stockyards
One of our friends made us reservations at Provender Hall for lunch. We enjoyed a casual, almost home-cooking style, lunch in the upstairs loft. I had chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and whole fried okra. Someone at our table ordered the cornbread appetizer, served in an iron skillet with mounds of butter on top! The varied menu offers something for even the most particular diners and we definitely recommend this restaurant.
After lunch, we shopped around the retail blocks of the stockyards. We were not mad that several stores offered complimentary beer and cocktails while we shopped! Cheers!
Billy Bob/s Texas
Billy Bob’s Texas is right there at the stockyards too, so of course we had to walk over there. If you aren’t familiar, this is the acclaimed world’s largest honky tonk at 100,000 at and includes a live bull riding arena. It’s also packed with bars, pool tables and has a large area for concerts by all of your favorite country performers. We’ve only seen Willie Nelson there, but the list of artists on that stage is endless. It was pretty quiet during the afternoon, the guys played pool, we had some wild bull pics taken and then us girls moseyed on out.
There is so much to do and see at Ft Worth Stockyards including their own rodeo (Stockyards Championship Rodeo every weekend), shopping, restaurants, mechanical bull riding, museum, Billy Bobs and more. Also, you can stay at Autograph Hotel Drover. Such a fun destination!
Time to check in our hotel and get ready for dinner and FWSSR Pro Rodeo. Since we were going to Dickies Arena for the rodeo, we didn’t stay at the stockyards, but booked a nice Homewood Suites and made dinner reservations at Mesero for some Mexican food!
Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo
Rodeo time! This is the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo, a ProRodeo (PRCA) annual tournament. There is also a Stockyards Championship Rodeo weekly at the Stockyards. We secured a parking pass for Chevrolet Garage at Dickies Arena. This is said to be the ideal place to park, but it’s huge so we still had quite a walk thru the garage to the arena entrance. Can’t imagine how tired my seldom boot clad feet would’ve been had we not been able to park in the garage! The arena is indoor and fabulous! We all enjoyed the rodeo events including calf roping, barrel racing, bull riding and the youth calf scramble. So entertaining!
Brewed Ft Worth
My new favorite place in Ft Worth is Brewed. This brunch spot had a great atmosphere with upscale whimsical decor, attentive servers, and the perfect menu-mainly because it included chicken and waffles, which I love! The syrup is brought out warm and the coffee cups are darling. Can’t wait to visit here again. It’s easy to find with Ft Worth Love mural on the side of the building.
Hope you enjoyed the recap of our couples weekend getaway to Ft Worth Stockyards & Rodeo. Ft Worth is a never ending fun spot no matter what time of the year you go. It has so much to offer and there are not enough meals in a trip to enjoy all of the fabulous restaurants. Ready for another visit soon!
About Us
We are Bud and Debbie Lilly, two travel lovers from Texas. Spending an enormous amount of time researching each location to find the best places to eat, sites to see and things to do is actually something I love to do. Not for everyone, I know. But, we are blogging our experiences to let you know what you can expect in each location and so you don’t have to redo the research. Let us know if you go on any of the same trips and if you find places that impress you. We would love to hear from you!
We feel so enriched by the people we meet and the places we see. Thank you for supporting our blog!
